Allotments

The Council has eight allotment sites situated at:

Brunswick Street
Lomeshaye

Cemetery
Manor Street

Hodge House
Swinden

Lee Bank
Spring Bank

The eight sites provide a total of 201 allotments and demand is high. There is presently a waiting list.

The allotments are self managed through the auspices of the Nelson & District Smallholders, Allotment Gardens & Horticultural Society and by way of a Committee at each site. Each site is a society and has its own committee each having its own secretary. The Nelson district allotment society is over 100 years old and meets up at present every three months. The secretaries of each allotment are encouraged to attend at which time we discuss any issues or any works required.

The officers of the District Society are:

Chairman
Vacant Position

Treasurer
Iris Wheeler

Secretary
Vacant Position

Applications

Each society have their own rules as to whether they feel that a person is suitable for taking on a plot and applicants may be invited to the committee meeting of that site and asked to read the rules etc and sign their tenancy agreement. This process is to ensure that they receive a set of the allotment rules which they agree to abide by. It is the individual committee which decides if the applicant is suitable.

If you wish to apply for an allotment, please download, complete and return the form to the Town Clerk on info@nelsontowncouncil.gov.uk. All completed applications will be forwarded to the District Allotments Society who will in turn forward it to the relevant branch.

Applications have been turned down in the past as it transpires that the site is likely to be used as a storage depot or such like and therefore against the allotment tenancy rules.
