Nelson Town Council Annual Town Meeting 15th May 2019

At last night's annual town council meeting - Councillor Zafar Ali was re-elected as Chairman for the municipal year 2019/20.
Councillor Nazeem Hayat was elected as Vice Chairman for the municipal year 2019/20.
As this year was an election year the Town Council welcomed a number of new members from all wards in Nelson.
The Chairman- Councillor Zafar Ali said “I am honoured to have been elected by the residents to serve in the office of Town Councillor again. It’s brilliant to see diversity in the members of the town council coming from a whole range of ages and backgrounds. I’m looking forward to continuing the excellent work we have been doing on delivering our functions efficiently whilst introducing new ideas to make Nelson a better place to live and work.”
The Town Council consists of 24 members of which 21 are affiliated with the Labour Party and 3 with the Conservative party.
The Town Council is responsible for managing functions such as town centre events, cctv, Unity Wellbeing Centre and Revive Cafe, play and games areas. The town council also contributes towards the maintenance of the parks as well as providing small grant funding to local community organisations.
The Vice Chairman-Councillor Nazeem Hayat said “myself and the chairman have worked together since 2015. We have overseen the development of the Unity Wellbeing Centre and Revive Cafe along with ensuring that the functions we run are fit for purpose. We have lots of challenges ahead including our aim to introduce mechanisms to help improve Nelson town centre.”
